I am in
my thirties, and have learning disabilities... but probably not what you
are thinking! You see, in the US "learning disability" is used to mean
specific learning problems, like dyslexia or dyscalculia. In the US the
term "intellectual disability" is used to mean the dx that your blog
post is about.
Other parts of the world use vastly different terms to
mean the same thing. Always changing the words threw pejoration or the
"euphemism treadmill". Your use of "learning disability" will someday
become extremely offensive, and you may be going threw this blog
changing words and deleting posts. Heck, the "L" word could be very
offensive to me and many in the US the way it is used in the UK (it is
NOT).

Not trying to make you feel bad, the "R" word hurts, I know
first hand. My abusive father called me a "retard" routinely because he
knew it hurt me so much. Kids called me "retard" in school. I didn't
handle it very well because of what we now call asperger (that dx didnt
exist back then). It led me to a few suicide attempts.

The
obvious problem was that I was so strongly offended by the word... I let
it destroy my self esteem, I let it get to me so much. If the R word
was wiped out of existence, then people would have found a new word to
replace it. It hurts because we let it hurt us.
While I am against
the use of the word, it is impossible to erase its existence. I would
rather spend my time trying to teach others how to not let these words
hurt them. Then maybe people will stop using it?Toddnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18079831.post-82958025909859694902014-06-17T11:52:37.978+01:002014-06-17T11:52:37.978+01:00Well said - you are right to be offended, you are ...Well said - you are right to be offended, you are right to pull people up on this and we should all be doing the same. Shame on those who have tried to make this about your reaction rather than the initial offensive commentsMuddling Alonghttp://www.muddlingalongmummy.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18079831.post-57436398873972918692014-06-11T08:09:55.963+01:002014-06-11T08:09:55.963+01:00Well said xWell said xLooking for Blue Skynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18079831.post-85380116998197658302014-06-09T22:06:56.931+01:002014-06-09T22:06:56.931+01:00Oh gosh, this is something I feel so strongly abou...Oh gosh, this is something I feel so strongly about too, and you're right it's not about being offended or not, it's about educating/informing people. Most people, well at least the decent ones, wouldn't want to go around hurting others intentionally, so I definitely would inform them, politely of course. If they then still choose to use those words, there is nothing you can do except walk away, hoping they would never come into contact with your daughter. I can't believe this word is still used - am glad I haven't ever heard it in life myself. But the internet is a scary place sometimes, and this word could easily become widespread again, hurting thousands. I have half a post written on a similar topic, must get around to finishing it! xxxStephs Two Girlshttp://www.stephstwogirls.co.uk/noreply@blogger.com
